At Ivy Dental we provide dental care for adults and children both under the NHS and privately. Examinations are free under the NHS in Scotland. Full written details of our private fee scales are available from your dentist on examination. The dental team will provide you with an estimate of treatment costs at the examination appointment.

Meet the team

Selina Alexander

Practice Manager
GDC no. 133549

Selina has over 20 years of experience in dentistry and is working towards a degree in Management. She started as a trainee dental nurse and over the years in dentistry has become qualified in dental nursing and a child smile nurse; she didn’t stop there and qualified in radiography too. Over the years Selina has worked her way up in dental practices and was General Manager for 8 ½ years before she moved to Ivy in January 2011 to become Clinical Manager then Business Manager.

Selina works behind the scenes of the practice and along with the support of our Clinical Manager and Implant Coordinator they create the smooth day to day running for the team and patients.  Having a passion for constantly improving our services Selina ensure that her team keep up to date with their continuing professional development and help them improve with staff meetings and courses.

When Selina is not working she likes to de-stress by going to boot camp and spending time with her friends and family. 

Dr Chris Chisholm

BDS MFDS
GDC no. 106225

Dr Christopher Chisholm graduated from the University of Bristol Dental School in 2007. Since then he has successfully completed the MFDS qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Having worked in the Maxillofacial Unit at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, Chris has always had a keen interest in oral surgery. The natural progression was to Implant Dentistry and Chris is currently midway through completing a MSc in Implant Dentistry at the University of Warwick. Chris has studied both at home and abroad as part of his implant training including training at the Malo Clinic where the "All on 4" treatment was pioneered in Lisbon. In addition to this Chris is very experienced in short term orthodontics and is able to offer both clear aligners and "6 months smiles" treatments. Most recently Chris has trained with Dr Bob Khanna in facial aesthetics which is an additional treatment he is now able to offer his patients. Chris is always looking for new courses to go on to broaden his skills and provide solutions for his patients.

Dr Joachim Gruber

Mr Joachim Gruber graduated from the University of Frankfurt in Germany in 2000. After starting his career in an established practice in Frankfurt he started a PhD at the University in Frankfurt which he completed successfully after 4 years. He was awarded the academic title Dr. med. dent.

After several years working in Germany he joined the Ivy Dental team, and has been with us since 2008.

Joachim is committed to providing his patients with the highest standards of dental care using the latest technology and materials available. To ensure that he keeps abreast of the ever changing developments in dentistry he continues an ongoing program of professional development.

He has developed a special interest in cosmetic and restorative treatment using modern cutting-edge techniques and is well renowned for his gentle and caring chairside manner.

Dr Anna Avis Da Costa

BDS MFDS
GDC no. 84826

Dr.Avis Da Costa comes from a family of dentists, obtained her first degree in 1999 from Bangalore university, one of the top universities in India. She went on to complete re-certification examinations to work in the UK by the General Dental Council. She then completed her second qualification, the MFDS, at the royal college of surgeons in Edinburgh. She has worked in hospital, community and general practice in Scotland and has been with the Ivy team since 2008. Her love of dentistry keeps her learning and attending courses covering all aspects of dentistry and is currently pursuing a diploma in restorative dentistry carried out by royal college of surgeons, England. Her vast experience has enabled her to offer her patients the best available treatments in cosmetic, prosthetic and all other aspects of dentistry. She strongly believes that dental care should be catered to individual patient needs and is known for being a gentle dentist.
When she is not practicing dentistry she is pursuing her other passions of gardening, art and looking after her twin daughters.

Dr Fraser Tait

Dr Fraser Tait graduated from the University of Dundee Dental School in 2011. He is committed to providing general family dentistry on the NHS and on a private basis as well as cosmetic treatments.  He has undertaken further training in the restoring of dental implants and has developed a great relationship with the dental laboratory to provide patients with the most lifelike looking crowns, veneers and bridges. Fraser is a good communicator and likes to take the time to make sure patients understand the treatment they need and establish good preventative practices to make sure their oral health remains excellent.

Dr Ibikunle Aluko

Dr Kunle Aluko qualified from the School of Dentistry at the University of  Lagos in 1994, where he was also awarded the Fellowship of the Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Orthodontics in 2004. He obtained full registration with the General Dental Council in the UK having passed the Statutory Examinations in 2005. 

He worked in the North West of England for 7 years providing private orthodontics and cosmetic dentistry before moving to Scotland. His commitment to continuous professional development led him to complete the Orthodontic Masters degree course at the University of Edinburgh followed with the Membership in Orthodontics of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.    

 

His interest is in multidisciplinary management of malocclusion and interceptive orthodontics.

 

Kunle is an ardent chess player and loves tennis and playing the piano. 

 

Dr Nadia Sheikh

Dr Nadia Sheikh qualified from the University of Glasgow Dental School in 2007 (BDS) .After which she went straight into general dental practice. She joined Ivy Dental in June 2014, having worked at her previous practice for 7 years. 

Nadia has a particular interest in treating anxious patients, to this end she attained her SAAD (Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry) qualifications in 2009 and has treated over 150 patients with conscious intravenous sedation using midazolam. 

Nadia has also developed her interest in facial aesthetics by gaining qualifications in providing both anti wrinkle (Botox) and filler treatments. This is a treatment she thoroughly enjoys providing.

Nadia has a very friendly, caring and professional manner which has made her popular with her patients.  She enjoys keeping her knowledge and skills up to date and regularly attends courses and lectures to keep abreast of current developments in dentistry. This allows her to provide treatment to the highest of standards using the latest techniques and materials.

Outside of work Nadia enjoys keeping fit and regularly goes to outdoor boot camp. She is passionate about shopping, cooking and having a young family keeps her busy.

Dr John Thompson

Dentist
GDC no. 86035

Dr John Thompson graduated from the Queens University, Belfast in 2005. 

He then completed his vocational training in the Scottish Borders where he worked in both mixed and private practice for 5 years. John then took a sabbatical for 8 months to travel Asia Australia and New Zealand before working in practice in Australia for 7 months.

John then returned to practice in Scotland and has been with Ivy Dental since 2012.

 

Since then he has successfully completed the MJDF qualification from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. John has undertaken further education in the restoration of dental implants and is also an accredited provider of the 6 Months Smiles orthodontic system.

 

Johns practice is based on a minimally invasive approach with conservation of as much natural tooth as possible. This is possible with the advances made by dental materials especially with regards to adhesive dentistry (white fillings) which allows him to recreate life like restorations. John has completed many hours of further education in this area with some of the most respected leaders in this field.

John also has a keen interest in root canal therapy and has again completed several courses in this field.

 

John has a friendly and professional manner which has made him popular with his patients.  He enjoys keeping his knowledge and skills up to date and this allows him to provide treatment to the highest of standards using the latest techniques and materials.

 

John currently splits his time between Ivy Dental and private practice in the Scottish Borders.

Outside of work John enjoys plays golf, football, cricket and tennis and much against his better judgement is an avid Liverpool supporter

Dr Duncan Weir

Dentist BDS (Glasgow) (MFDS Edinburgh)

Dr. Duncan Weir is the newest member of our Dental Team.  He Graduated from Glasgow Dental School where he obtained the Board of Management prize for his work in relation to periodontal (gum) treatment.  He also completed his membership exams to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Duncan particularily enjoys working with children as he worked in the Edinburgh Dental Institute as a paediatric dentist treating anxious children with complex dental conditions. This was followed by positions as both a Senior House officer in Oral and maxillofacial surgery and at  Birmingham Dental hospital, where he worked and trained in restorative dentistry and advanced cosmetic dental procedures.

He has joined us after working for 2 year in private practice in Sydney, Australia.  It was here he developed his passion for surfing which he continues along in East Lothian.

Duncan’s calming, friendly and cheerful nature helps put patients at ease.  He strives to make sure every patient has a tailored treatment plan that meets his or her every need.

Outside dentistry, as well as surfing, Duncan is compete in a variety of sports from football to windsurfing.

Mehmet Acik

Decontamination Nurse

Mehmet joined the team in 2011  and has a busy, full time role ensuring all our instruments and equipment are effectively cleaned and sterilised.

Mehmet has very high standards and you can be assured our sterilisation process is second to none !

Outside working hours, Mehmet loves to spend his spare time in the gym or equally as energetic playing 5 aside football !

 

Suzanne Preston

Deputy Practice Manager

Suzanne has worked at Ivy Dental Practice for over 20 years after attending Telford College Edinburgh and is also a registered dental nurse. As clinical manager Suzanne ensures our patients receive the highest standards of care and looks after the excellent team that Ivy Dental is proud to have as staff members.
Outside of work Suzanne enjoys the outdoor life and supporting her young son playing football.

Jennifer Ann McClay

Implant Co-ordinator

Jenniferann studied at Edinburgh dental institute, qualifying in dental nursing in 2006.

She joined the team after completing her studies and since then has earned qualifications in a number of specialist areas including dental radiography and oral health education.

Jenniferann ensures that all our implant procedures run smoothly, and makes sure our patients are cared for from initial contact to last their final appointment.

Joelle Vazquez

Nurse

Joelle joined Ivy Dental Practice in October 2014 as a trainee dental nurse, after a change in her career path.

This certainly paid off when Joelle qualified in March 2015 and is now loving being an important part of the Ivy team.

Whether you are in the surgery or checking in for your appointment, Joelle will be waiting to greet you with her friendly smile and ensure your visit goes as smoothly as possible.

Nothings too much trouble for our Joelle !

Natalie Milne

Natalie qualified as a dental nurse in 2011, and joined Ivy Dental in Nov 2013.

Natalie forms part of the large nursing team in the practice, and is always on hand to reassure patients during treatment.

Out with the practice Natalie loves to catch up with friends and family when possible.

Mikela Polson

National Diploma in Dental Nursing.

Qualified in 2012.

Mikaela enjoys all aspects of Dental nursing and working on reception, and plays a vital role in making sure your visit is as pleasant as possible.

She is climbing Ben Nevis for a dental charity called Dentaid.

Jill Tyers

Nurse

Jill joined the reception team in Oct 2000. Jill’s understanding, caring nature is invaluable to the practice and goes without saying that patients are warmly welcomed the minute they come through the door. Jill’s caring nature also shows through with her commitment to adopting rescue dogs, ensuring they too are given her full attention and devotion !

Jill thoroughly loves her job, but when away from the reception desk, Jill likes to pursue her love of travel and is a keen motorcyclist.

Patricia Steele

Hygienist
GDC no. 1276

Tricia relocated to Fife having lived and worked in Oxfordshire for over 20 years. She qualified whilst serving in the Royal Air Force in Buckinghamshire and joined Ivy Dental Practice in 2010.

Tricia is the trade liaison officer for the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy, which is a group providing continued professional development for hygienists and therapists in the area.

Out with work and work related duties, Tricia loves to experiment with cooking and is a supporter of Heriots Rugby Club.

Rachel Prentice

Rachel joined the Ivy Team in 2006, originally in our decontamination unit, but Rachel soon realised that dental nursing would be a rewarding career.

Rachel them embarked on her dental nursing training, and very admirably passed her national certificate, to become a much valued part of the nursing team.

When Rachel isn’t in surgery, she can be found either keeping fit in the gym or with Sire her best friend, her Dogue De Bordeaux !

Kelly-Marie Doran

Kelly qualified from Edinburgh Dental Institute and has been a registered dental nurse since 2006. Kelly joined Ivy Dental in March 2009 and has used her wealth of experience to recently gain her postgraduate qualification in radiography.

Kelly brings her knowledge to both the NHS and private side of dentistry, with a special interest in the more advanced areas of dentistry.

A sympathetic, caring approach is always guaranteed with Kelly’s presence in the surgery, giving much valued and appreciated reassurance with her patients !

Quality time with family is top of the list for Kelly out with work, and has a love of cooking, travel and keeping fit.

Pamela Simpson

Pamela has been a qualified dental nurse since 2010 and joined the Ivy team in 2011. Pamela also holds a qualification in Dental Radiography, which she gained in September 2013.

Joanne Raeburn

Reception Team

Joanne started with Ivy in May 2008 initially working in our decontamination unit, before training in the reception side of the practice.

Joanne is always at hand to help with any queries you may have and welcomes patients with her cheery smile.

Always keen to ensure the reception area is happy, helps make a relaxing atmosphere as patients enter the waiting room !

Joanne likes to unwind by dancing away any stress with her dance group, or enjoying some fresh air on lovely long walks with her two dogs
